Sardinia
Sardinia is an Italian island that sits in the Mediterranean Sea about half-way between Italy and France and directly below the French island of Corsica. It is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and Italy’s third largest region. The geographical area spans about 13,760 square miles with nearly 1200 miles of coastline. There are approximately 1.6 million people who permanently reside on the island with about 170,000 people living in the capital, Cagliari, and an additional 500,000 in the metropolitan area. Although fishing and agriculture, as well as mining and chemical industries are major contributors to the economy, most recently the greatest source of economic wealth has come from tourism.
